Casato Prime Donne Award - The Rules

Montalcino, March 2010

Fattoria Casato Prime Donne in Montalcino and Fattoria del Colle in Trequanda, announce the twelfth
edition of the International Award “Casato Prime Donne” 2010.

“Casato Prime Donne”
A prize awarded to women, the science of wine making, photography and journalism

Prime Donne is the name of an international award for the science of wine making, journalism, and
photography that celebrates as a “Prima Donna” a female figure that is of example or of help to other women.
Prime Donne is the name of the first great Italian red wine - a Brunello - selected by female tasters and destined for female consumers.
Prime Donne is the name of the first Italian winery with an all female staff, operating on the slopes of Montalcino (Siena) since 2001.
A trail walk through the Brunello vineyards derives from the Casato Prime Donne award, with phrases from the winners - Carla Fracci, Kerry Kennedy, Paola Capriolo, Marta Morazzoni, Francesca Sanvitale, Santa Francesca Saverio Cabrini, Frances Mayes and Josefa Idem - together with works of art by young artists and explanations regarding the landscape. The works of art are by Marco Pignattai, Rossana
Mulinari, Bruno Bruchi and Giovanni Senatore, Alessandro Grazi, Orlando Orlandini, Stefano Carlucci and Jeff Shapiro.
So, Prime Donne is a project that highlights the countryside and above all, the countryside as seen through women’s eyes. The most important moment is the award giving ceremony, which takes place at the end of September in the theatre in Montalcino, one of the most beautiful medieval villages in
Tuscany.
The rules include several sections, the main one being an award for a woman who has dedicated her life to other women.
The other prizes aim more directly at valorising the Sienese countryside in all its human, cultural and productive aspects. Wine, the most noble and prestigious fruit of this land, has an important relevance in the Award for literature and science of wine production offered by the Province of Siena. The winner must give two lectures to young Sienese enologists at the Istituto Agrario and at the University.
The prize sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce of Siena is directly connected to the land and offers a selection of photographs to be judged by a popular jury of 50 representatives of all the activities and all the administrations of the 13 municipalities where Brunello and DOC Orcia are produced: the most
beautiful images portraying this splendid countryside, one of the most photographed panoramas in the world and a challenge for professional reporters who give to those living here the possibility of
understanding how their territory is seen by the rest of the world.
The journalistic sections are a tribute to those who study or divulge Montalcino and its wines. Apart from financial remuneration, the winner receives bottles of Brunello and a holiday in the Fattoria del Colle country inn. This opportunity, for many winners such as Robert Fox, Horst Dippel, Helle and Alfredo
Tesio, has made them feel so at home that they come to us for frequent holidays.
Donatella Cinelli Colombini’s estate organizes the whole event; she was one of the first to believe in wine tourism in Italy and created “Wine Day”. In fact the wines and the two wineries Casato Prime Donne in Montalcino and Fattoria del Colle in Trequanda are the major sponsors of this award and of a new
message for women in agriculture.
