Quotations from the winners of the Casato Prime Donne award accompany those walking through Donatella Cinelli Colombini’s Brunello vineyards, where Tuscan artists have exhibited their work. The surrounding landscape of the Val d’Orcia, declared by Unesco as part of the heritage of humanity, helps to meditate on man’s destiny and on the special destiny of women.

Every year the winner of the award dictates a phrase which is then engraved on a monument destined to remain for ever in the Brunello vineyards at Casato Prime Donne. “Look around” writes Carla Fracci “ you are in the moral centre of the world”.
At the beginning of the route there are three enormous wrought-iron flags which represent the “Gangheretti”- coloured elves designed by Alessandro Grazi, a painter and graphic artist from Siena, who has created the Palio for the July 2007 race.
On the highest point of Casato Prime Donne there has been positioned the phrase from Santa Francesca Cabrini to women “May the sacred heart of Jesus bless you. May the cloak of the Immaculate Mother be spread over all of you”.
Here Rossana Mulinari erected a cross called “ànimo” surrounded by six blocks in travertine. At the end of the route, on the façade of the Casato Prime Donne winery, there are the photographs called “foemina” by Bruno Bruchi and Giovanni Senatore, four images of contemporary women, each very different one from the others.
A young architect from Montalcino, Marco Pignattai, created “Ardita” a life-size Chianina cow in travertine who pulls a real plough just as the real cows have done for centuries.
With this trekking route the Brunello vineyards become a place for meditation and an open air gallery of contemporary art. Here more than anywhere else walking enriches the spirit and tones the body. |
