The Montalcino landscape, declared by Unesco an important part of world heritage, is the perfect place for quiet contemplation and provides a wonderful frame for works of art. For this reason, a trail walk has been created among the Brunello vineyards where the rest spots are embellished with pieces of contemporary art, signposts describing the landscape, and noteworthy quotations.
The phrases were written by the winners of the "Casato Prime Donne" Award: Carla Fracci, the Cabrianian nuns, Kerry Kennedy, the volunteer workers of the Telefono Rosa Association, and Frances Mayes, ali women who, through the example of their own actions, promote women's role in society and in the working world.
Among the artists who have created the works of art are Marco Pignattai, Rossana Mulinari, Bruno Bruchi, Giovanni Senatore, Alessandro Grazi and Orlando Orlandini. The five rest spots of this itinerary also contain signs that indicate the history of the surrounding areas. Trekkers will learn about the Abbadia Ardenga where, according to legend, Emperor Arrigo VII was poisoned with a blessed Host.
Walking slowly, one becomes acquainted with the landscape. Above Casato is the road called Sferracavalli, which owes its name to the apparition in 1553 that left Don Garcia de Toledo's horses without their horseshoes.
A little further right is the castle belonging to the sculptor Sandro Chia, and past that stands Ferragamo's Montalcino home with a chapel with frescoes by Lorenzetti.
