Coravin the corkscrew destined to revolutionize the consumption of expensive wines because it exploded

At the beginning of the year Robert Parker had cited the diffusion of Coravin in 7th position among the most significant trends in 2014. The father of “Wine Advocate” was convinced that Coravin would revolutionize the consumption of luxury wines making it accessible also for wine lovers who were not millionaires. And in fact the possibility of drinking a little from a bottle worth 5-10.000 Euro without having to pay for all of it made it a great opportunity for lovers of great wines, those who enjoy their bottles and don’t keep them in a vault so as to gain value.

The contraption costs 300 $ and basically extracts the wine through a needle inserted through the cork, which pumps in Argon gas which permits the conservation of the rest of the liquid in perfect conditions…. But, it breaks the bottle during usage! 7 separate episodes, one in Hong Kong and the rest in the US among which, a client who had the bottle very close when the explosion occurred and was cut and got two broken teeth.. In May the inventor Greg Lambrecht was forced to withdraw these super corkscrews from the market. Then finally he understood that the pressure of 1,5 atmospheres of pressure
created by the gas inserted into the bottles, to get the wine to come out, was a risk, and so has created a neoprene sleeve to wrap around the bottle while pouring. The 40.000 clients who had bought the contraption, have received the sleeve as a gift, and the sales have picked up again and going better than ever. Greg Lambrecht has a past a san bio-engineering inventor and this helped him find the solution. Coarvin too is fruit of his creative genius, in 11 years of work, in his home basement, he was able to assemble pieces coming from Usa, China and Austria and in so reaching the result, which now, seems capable of offering tastings of great wines “through the course of time”. Yes, because the benefit of the Coravin is that a bottle of Petrus, a sip at a time, can last a lifetime.
But, what is more important, for us mere mortals with limited spending possibilities there is the possibility of tasting dream wines without having to finish your savings …. For example a Henri Jayer 1999 Vosne Romanee Cros Parantoux which normally costs between 6and 10 thousand Euro per bottle, and is one of the best expressions of Pinot Noir from Burgundy … I really would not say no to a sip thank you!
