In North America there are 135 Master Sommelier among which only 19 women. To get this title one must succeed in 4 formative levels each with an exam. A 12 year experience and a 4.000$ investment but in the end you can earn as much as 125.000 dollars per year. The starting point for my post is an article in Intravino which I suggest you read.

In Italy thing are not so bright. The average salary of a full time sommelier is about 1.500$ per month, to which tips are to be added, and sometimes percentages on sales. It’s not bad, considering the moment, but certainly a lot less than the salaries quoted by Bloomberg.

In the list of professions that nobody would imagine being so well paid one finds also the storm trackers hunters who know when and where one will hit, the IT experts –certified

ethical hackers who protect electronic systems from real hackers, in second position the “phone sex operators”. Operators who have imaginative and improvisational skills can earn as much as 160.000 $, answering 24 calls every 4 hours. On the podium are bodyguards with salaries that reach 180.000$ per year. These are men with a past in the military Special Forces or as secret agents for the government. So tough guys who can take down 3-4 unarmed attackers.
Going back to the well paid great wine experts that Bloomberg talks about, it is amusing to see in their web site their association “The Court of Master Sommeliers”, discovering that is was born in Great Britain in 1969 so in the same nation and 14 years after the Masters of Wine of which they seem to be the direct competitors.

In the web site there is a notice saying that the “Diploma di Master Sommelier” given in Alma << a hotel school located in Colorno (Parma) Italy>> has nothing to do with what is given by the Court of Master Sommelier (sole and inimitable). A clear declaration which shows Alma in a bad light, the Gualtiero Marchesi school, is guilty only of having chosen a name that confuses, in fact the sommelier wine training course programmed in collaboration with AIS is called Master Sommelier. What a mess up!
