The most important project at Donatella Cinelli Colombini’s wineries is dedicated to women and is finalized at increasing their dignity and their role in the wine world.
The Prime Donne project is made up of four parts: the Casato Prime Donne winery, the first in Italy with an all female staff, created so as to demonstrate that great wines don’t need big muscles but intelligence, tenacity and passion, things of which women have more than enough of. Read more…
maker Valérie Lavigneand the cellar master Barbara Magnani finished the tasting with a smile, sure to have chosen wines that will have an impact.
With no Brunello 2009 to taste, vintage where the selection Brunello Prime Donne will not be produced, the super tasters concentrated on the vintages 2012 and 2010. The 2012 inspired them for its power and fullness already well expressed only a few months from vinification. The new 5 and 7 hl barrels in French oak have been chosen for the first phase in ageing of this sumptuous wine. For the future Brunello 2010 it was in fact the last tasting before bottling. The blend between small and medium barrels chosen by the tasters will permit production of only 6.600 bottles. Less than foreseen by decidedly excellent.
The Brunello dedicated to women, in the direction for Sangiovese and Montalcino tipicity, a new research of personality and finesse with little “oak effect”
The Brunello Prime Donne 2008 expresses its full belonging to the identity of Sangiovese and Montalcino. In other words it exalts those characteristics of the grape variety and of the Brunello territory that right on the Montalcino hill reach their excellence. A choice that puts the wine’s personality in the role as protagonist. The choice of refined style is also evident: a togetherness of harmony, elegance, roundness and lengthiness.
The effect of the barrel ageing, where the wine has rested for more than two years, becomes softer also because of the choice of medium and large barrels after the winemaker Valerie Lavigne asked us to empty our cellar of barriques. Read more…
2012 a very tiring year where a lot of work has been done. Great awards, successes, small commercial progress and great difficulties tied to the International crisis.
Vinitaly 2012 - Donatella Cinelli Colombini - Premio Internazionale Vinitaly
The best image of the past year is of the Premio internazionaleVinitalyreceived directly from the President Mr. Riello and the General Manager of Veronafiere Giovanni Mantovani. Such an important award which I shared with Debra Meiburg the Master of Wine who rates 7th in the list of most powerful women in wine in the world.
A good portrait of the increase in quality of the wines from this cellar is given by the image of 5 wines with ratings over 90/100 in Wine Spectator: Il Drago e le 8 Colombe, Cenerentola, Brunello, Brunello Prime Donne and Riserva, the latter with 95/100 is in the Olympus of the 18 Italian “Top Wines” chosen by Wine Spectator. The Brunello Prime Donne is among those Highly Recommended by “Decanter” and among the three preferred by the Master of Wine Rosemary George. Read more…
When Donatella Cinelli Colombini opened the “Wine Spectator” dated 30th September she found that her Brunello Riserva 2006 is the top of the “Spectator selections”. This is her dream come true. Every manufacturer hopes to see her wine in that magical place at least once in her career and Donatella has now achieved it.
But there was also other good news, a few pages later she found that her Brunello 2007 Prime Donne had been awarded 92 points and that her Brunello 2007 had received 90 points. What a wonderful result! The descriptions of these two wines were written by Bruce Sanderson, director of the “Tasting department” of this prestigious American magazine.
Here is what he wrote:
92 Brunello di Montalcino Prime Donne 2007. A powerful version characterized by flavours of cherries, plums and tobacco with a hint of juniper and mint. Dense tannins are interrupted in the final tastes of this wine by the sweetness of the fruit mixed together with a subtle spicy edge. This wine will be at its best between 2014 and 2027
90 Brunello di Montalcino 2007. Strong and muscular, this harmonious red gives us flavours of cherries, plums, tobacco and spices, with receding tannins and finally finishing with a freshness. This wine will be at its best between 2014 and 2027.
The article continues with more positive evaluations for the Rosso di Montalcino 2009 and 2010 both of which were judged worthy of 89/100 and both are amongst the top seven of their denomination. The description of the 2010, written by Bruce Sanderson, even starts to rival the comments for the Brunello.
Here it is: This big, rich red wine has notes of cherry, plum and hints of the earth. Dense and tannic, well balanced on a large scale. Its taste ends up being dry and satisfying. This wine will be at its best between 2013 and 2018.
