Come on, it’s time to vote! It is fun and your opinion is important.

The 5 finalist images renard the territories where the Brunello and Orcia wines are produced, 13 villages: Montalcino, Pienza, Buonconvento, Castiglione d’Orcia, Radicofani, San Quirico d’Orcia and Trequanda, parts of Abbadia San Salvatore, Chianciano Terme, San Casciano dei Bagni, Sarteano and Torrita di Siena.

A territory, this, most of which is part of the Unesco world heritage site famous for its beauty and history. This is a difficult competition because all of the best professional landscape photographers have pointed their lenses towards these soft hills, the cypress trees in San Quirico, the grape growers Etruscan faces, the Vitaleta Chapel, wineries, the Foce gardens …. So that they have become icons of Tuscany, true and beautiful. In other words a post card effect, something like a “déjà vu” can in some way hinder those looking. However everybody wants to try, professionals and amateurs.

Every year the winner is chosen online by a popular jury, who choose among the 5 finalists previously selected by the Casato Prime Donne jury.

The winning images are exhibited permanently in Montalcino, al Casato Prime Donne, in the hall dedicated to Ilda Bartoloni, the Rai journalist who passed away in 2009 to whom we owe the present formula of the Casato Prime Donne Award. Together these images create a collection of great quality and value that tells of the different  and personal views of the countryside where the Brunello and Orcia wines are born Read more…

Casato Prime Donne Award 2017

Casato Prime Donne Award 2017

Casato Prime Donne Award 2017

Within June 15th articles or photographs regarding the wine territories Brunello and Orcia must be sent to the award secretariat to participate in the 19th edition of this event. This award year after year grows in visibility and appreciation. It has the goal of expressing gratitude from the territory towards those who promote its culture and the wine productions but most of all its scope is to emphasize women who propose new models of femininity. During the years the Casato Prime Donne award has anticipated times by giving recognition to special women, not yet well known, who later have done memorable things such as Samantha Cristoforetti who 4 years after receiving the award went into space. Or it has emphasized the civil courage of a great astrophysicist who came back from abroad to teach in an Italian University – Sandra Savaglio – or like the young Muslim who opposes terrorism by risking her own life – Chaimaa Fatihi. The Casato Prime Donne puts a spot light on a new way of being woman in a society that is changing and asks the female gender for a contribution in courage, ethics ad positive examples.

New barrels for the Brunello 2016

February, the new barrels enter the winery and become the cribs for the future Brunello. Here explained the reasons for certain choices

February is the month where traditionally the future Brunello begins its barrel ageing. There are those who begin sooner, as suggested by the late Professor Yves Glories, the winemaker who taught the whole world how to interpret the polyphenolic ripening of the grapes. We were at the Bordeaux 2University,P1100916-300x225 where he used to teach, at the end of January 2001, and I gave him a tasting of my most recent harvest, and was thorough told off because I had not yet but it into barrel.

The Montalcino tradition is that of putting wine into the wooden casks when it has finished the malolactic fermentation and the first decanting. For this reason consultant wine makers like our Valerie Lavigne, visit their wineries and taste the entire new production together with the internal wine technician, in our case Barbara Magnani.

It is a very careful and slow examination of every vat. Chemical analysis, vineyard maps, grape harvest diaries…but most of all the actual tasting, all of this conducts to the final decision regarding the destiny of every mass of wine.

Up until 50 years ago, Barbara’s office was the Fattoria del Colle office. It is a small room

at the entrance of the 16th century villa, and from which the wine aroma reaches the offices above. Barbara and Valerie sit one in front of the other each with their laptop in front of them. Both love technology, so no written sheets with tasting notes, all is digital.

It will be the crowning of the cultural value of wine, of its being an important part of the Sienese civilization that has produced works of art such as the Buongoverno fresco chosen by Unesco as worldwide image to represent Peace, or the historic act such as the “constituto” from 1309, the first constitutional paper written in vernacular so that everyone could read and understand it. All of this in this magnificent building, a special treat to visit it with a glass o f wonderful Brunello 2012 in your hand.

This and much more for Wine&Siena organized by the Merano Wine Festival with 250 wine producers and food artisans chosen one by one. Every exhibitor has had to submit their bottles to a commission, who has accepted and rewarded the best. Our five wines have all received an award, and our two Brunello 2012 have also obtained gold medals.

The formula of the Sienese event, which takes place 20 days before the Tuscan wine previews begin, is a mixture of art, history and of course wine and food. The locations are true art treasure chests  such as the Rocca Salimbeni where the general offices of the Monte dei Paschi di Siena bank are, and where the Chianti, Chianti Classico, Montecucco,Vini Cortona …will be tasted.  In Palazzo Sansedoni 4 master classes will be held, with guided tastings (not to be missed the view over Piazza del Campo, the piazza where the Palio horse race is held). The Doc Orcia together with Bolgheri, Piemonte, Veneto wines … and all the gastronomy will be in halls of one of the oldest universities in the world founded 1240.
