One of the fun aspects of my job at Fattoria del Colle is the time I spend with guests visiting the estate. Be it here or at Casato Prime Donne in Montalcino it is really nice to show experts or wine lovers where we produce and age the Chianti, Doc Orcia and Brunello.
I have always thought that telling people what is “behind” a bottle of wine, the challenges, the decisions and everything else that brings to a quality wine , to be the most important aspect of my job, that is why I am always happy to see the curious expressions of those following me and to hear their questions. It must be said though that there is no limit to what I have been asked, every time I think that I have heard the best then a young bright lad or a professor lifts his glasses to look at me all the better… and I remain speechless. My grandfather Giovanni Colombini talked about it as if it were the mount of the gods, the Olympus of the Piedmont wines. Later I myself have been guest of my friend Anna Abbona from Marchesi di Barolo and I have seen for myself the beauty of the Cannubi hill covered in vineyards which in the autumn become a golden sea. From this romantic painting made up of a great landscape and great Barolo wines, we then descend to a situation full of court robes, duty-stamps and legal litigations. In other words from poetical to judicial.
What is considered the historical mother of Barolo, the Cannubi hill, is divided among 5 of the 166 “Menzioni geografiche aggiuntive” foreseen by the rules of production for Barolo DOCG approved in 2009: Next to Cannubi there are also Cannubi San Lorenzo, Cannubi Valletta, Cannubi Boschis, and Cannubi Muscatel. The scarce productions from the 2011 and 2012 vintages have created a great increase in prices which in the exportation of wines has originated 5 billion dollars more business.
InItaly, after the surprising increase in the 2012 harvest foreseen of 40 million hectolitres and then resulted in 45,6 there is another surprising fact:South Africahas sold 14 million litres of cask wine during the first semester of this year. Our nation was originally an exporting nation of cask wine and we had double hulled vessels for transportation, while now we import vast quantities, especially fromSpain.
The Spanish send wine from the cask toFrance,GermanyandItaly. Even though our nation
has bought less of it than usual (- 39%) it results in being a good client. The Spanish wine can be blended with the Italian, originating “Vino della Comunità Europea” with a low price and destined to every day use. A completely different situation for the wine coming from South Africa which seems to have disappeared. Nobody knows where it has gone, but for sure the change from a small amount to such an immense amount does surprise.
There are few certainties for Italian tourism were the non registered nights seem to be, according to ISTAT, 56%ofte total and in Puglia they would even multiply by 6 the official number. A situation which make any evaluation doubtful and especially makes a credible projection for the future impossible, but Trademark, the major Italian institute for surveys, tries all the same concluding with a situation full of light and shadows.
The first negative element is the amount spent on promotion: summing up all the expenses of all the regions we obtain an amount that is double that invested in Spain, three times as much as what is spent in France and 10 times the USA budget. But if only it were of some use! In fact though it results as being a << conceited exhibition that goes on since 1970 … waist, double expenses, false buyers, false educational trips, mess ups ….>> as they are descried by Aureliano Bonini from Trademark who brings attention to the large number of politic delegations who go abroad. A tasting of 41 Montalcinowineries in Houston – Texas attracts operators from hundreds of kilometres and even from other states
The USA are now the largest Brunello market, even larger than Italy. They absorb 25% of the total production, which means one bottle of Brunello very four. If we consider that most of the wine sold in Montalcino is sold to foreign tourists Italy goes below this quota and become the second market. It seems strange but that is how it is!
For this reason the first important tasting of the new Brunello 2008 takes place in the USA even before the Benvenuto Brunello kermess in Montalcino.
Every year the presentation in the USA takes place in New York and in another key city. This year for the first time we are in Texas, and it’s a success.
Don’t think of cowboys and cattle, here there is true richness, petrol, an industry bound to electronics, here is found the best hospital in the world and the largest university if the States. A less formal lifestyle and dress style but, many dollars…everything is big, exaggeratedly big!
The Brunello tasting location is a structure used for banquets, with a large hall and a smaller one for the two seminars held by Kevin Zralya wine expert and tutor for wine courses of international fame. Read more…
