Brunello di Montalcino 2011 surprisingly great

General stupefaction over the  Brunello di Montalcino 2011 that is liked just as good, if not more, than the legendary 2010 vintage

Brunello di Montalcino 2011 and 2010 tasting with Luciano Pignataro

Brunello di Montalcino 2011 and 2010 tasting with Luciano Pignataro

It all began on January 22° when Luciano Pignataro, genial and transgressive as ever, publishes an article “Brunello di Montalcino: la 2011 è meglio della 2010. (Brunello 2011 is better than 2010- Blind tasting of 44 samples”.

The group of tasters is of very high level: Fabio Casamassima, Luciano Di Lello, Antonio Di Spirito, Daniele Moroni, Gianmarco Nulli Gennari, Andrea Petrini, Giuseppe Picconi, Luciano Pignataro, Stefano Ronconi, Fabrizio Russo, Maurizio Valeriani.

Informal location, chequered tablecloth and what seems to be quite a joke is instead a real touch of genius. Because among the general bewilderment these Brunello, from a 4 star vintage,2011,  with no expectations from the market, result on average better than the 2010 vintage, that so celebrated by critics and buyers all over the world.  All the better known Brunello included, even Biondi Santi . Only in 8 cases, including mine and that of the best known winery in Montalcino, did the 2010 beat the most recent, but however the differences were really minimal and the level in general very high.

To confirm this opinion come, on January 29th, the ratings by Walter Speller super – tater from the very well known blog by the Master of Wine Jancis Robinson. In this case we can compare the Brunello “selection” 2011 and the riserva 2010 or rather those wines for which every winery strives to do their best. Here too the opinions are very close, and considering that Speller liked the Riserva 2010 very much, he said to MontalcinoNews <<it is rally a quality Riserva it was years since there had been such quality >> Read more…

This is Bruce Sanderson’s description <<This ripe juicy Brunello offers plenty of sweet cherry and licorice flavors. The tannins are assertive but overall this is balance. All the elements come together on long finish of briar and tobacco. Best drinking time between 2017 and 2023>>
93/100 is the maximum rating given to a Riserva 2008 Brunello di Montalcino, and we share this wonderful result with La Gerla, Mastrojanni – Vigna Loreto and Poggio Antico.
Bruce Sanderson, the wine critic who, for the last four years has tasted all the Brunellos, spent his first working years in the wine trade, and has been working for 21 years for Wine Spectator where he is one of the “Senior Editors” and he manages the entire “tasting department”. Read more…

In vino veritas and Brunello also becomes a mystery

  • Published in Forum

CSI the very lucky TV series from the USA which unites suspense and science this time investigates expensive wines and Brunello is among them.

CSI Crime Scene Investigation

CSI Crime Scene Investigation

The great wine from Montalcino again on TV with the 13th episode of the 13th series of Scene Investigation, with a story full of suspense called “In Vino Veritas”. This was the introduction <<While the team tries to solve a homicide case connected to prestigious wines, Mac Taylor arrives in Las Vegas from the New York police laboratory and discovers that his girlfriend has disappeared….>>. The episode was viewed in Italy last May 30th (mentioned by MontalcinoNews) and tells about a wine collector, the wine from Montalcino is part of the story and not only of this episode as the girlfriend of one of the investigators produces Brunello.

In other words Brunello is more and more on TV. Do you remember the Vodafone advert with he bear who calls his girlfriend from the wellness centre << hi Brunella, are you still in Montalcino >>?

In fact the great red Tuscan wine is often in advertisements for well equipped kitchen, luxury suitcases, crystal wine goblets…. it really is a symbol of Italian elegance recognized worldwide. Brunello is now a synonym for prestigious wine so it is usual to read phrases such as <<he can’t tell the difference between Tavernello and Brunello>> meaning  <<he doesn’t understand anything about wine>>.

In the end the myth of a wine, in the new millennium, is made also of such things.
