Come on, it’s time to vote! It is fun and your opinion is important.

The 5 finalist images renard the territories where the Brunello and Orcia wines are produced, 13 villages: Montalcino, Pienza, Buonconvento, Castiglione d’Orcia, Radicofani, San Quirico d’Orcia and Trequanda, parts of Abbadia San Salvatore, Chianciano Terme, San Casciano dei Bagni, Sarteano and Torrita di Siena.

A territory, this, most of which is part of the Unesco world heritage site famous for its beauty and history. This is a difficult competition because all of the best professional landscape photographers have pointed their lenses towards these soft hills, the cypress trees in San Quirico, the grape growers Etruscan faces, the Vitaleta Chapel, wineries, the Foce gardens …. So that they have become icons of Tuscany, true and beautiful. In other words a post card effect, something like a “déjà vu” can in some way hinder those looking. However everybody wants to try, professionals and amateurs.

Casato Prime Donne Award 2017

A few days left to send to the Casato Prime Donne Award secretariat articles, videos and images published between June 1st  2016 and 2017

Casato Prime Donne Award 2017

Casato Prime Donne Award 2017

Within June 15th articles or photographs regarding the wine territories Brunello and Orcia must be sent to the award secretariat to participate in the 19th edition of this event. This award year after year grows in visibility and appreciation. It has the goal of expressing gratitude from the territory towards those who promote its culture and the wine productions but most of all its scope is to emphasize women who propose new models of femininity. During the years the Casato Prime Donne award has anticipated times by giving recognition to special women, not yet well known, who later have done memorable things such as Samantha Cristoforetti who 4 years after receiving the award went into space. Or it has emphasized the civil courage of a great astrophysicist who came back from abroad to teach in an Italian University – Sandra Savaglio – or like the young Muslim who opposes terrorism by risking her own life – Chaimaa Fatihi. The Casato Prime Donne puts a spot light on a new way of being woman in a society that is changing and asks the female gender for a contribution in courage, ethics ad positive examples.

president, Rosy Bindi, Anselma Dell’Olio, Anna Pesenti, Stefania Rossini, Anna Scafuri and Daniela Viglione represents in its compound character and in its multidisciplinary competences an privileged observation of the present society and has been able to give substance and messages to the Casato Prime Donne award making it a great instrument for social and territorial promotion. The Prince of Wales meets Brunello

On April 1st I met the Prince Charles the Prince of Wales, who charmed me off my feet. I assure you it is not an April fools, quite the contrary here I tell you all

We producers we called to meet at 6 pm, but the royal couple arrived two hours later. Allegra Antinori, Jacopo Biondi Santi, Leonardo Frescobaldi, Vittorio Moretti from Petra, Giuseppe Mazzacolin from Felsina, Giovanni Manetti from Fontodi …. All ready to serve bottles that were impeccably presented by the sommeliers of FIS Fondazione Italiana Sommelier duided by Franco Ricci in person. The setting was spectacular: Villa San Michele, a terrace over Florence with a facade decorated by Michelangelo. The panorama is similar to that seen from my home, where in the 14th century Giovanni Boccaccio set the scene of the “Ninfale fiesolano”, on the other hand maybe my view of Florence is better, but I do not have the exquisite elegance of the halls of this exclusive and romantic hotel. Maybe it is because of this luxury that Prince Charles and his wife Camilla have chosen it for

their Italian stay.

I was expecting a somewhat sad character, someone frozen by etiquette but surprisingly Prince Charles was delightful, with a stupendously British “sense of humour” and an ability to mingle with people fruit of a life dedicated to his nation. He is an extraordinary ambassador for the United Kingdom, people love him. When I told him that my Brunello Riserva came from a winery staffed only by women he laughed thinking about how it might be cosseted but he was incredible curious about the organic regime in the vineyards <<is it difficult here for you? And how do you cure diseases?> he wanted to know. Read more…

Casato Prime Donne Award - Photographic Contest

Casato Prime Donne Award – Photographic Contest

The Casato Prime Donne Award has reached this year its 18th edition. It emphasizes the best work by journalists and photographers regarding the wine  territories in south of Siena and every year chooses a “Prima Donna”,  a woman who during the year stands out because of her way of life or in her work so as to become an example to women and not only. The list of past winners includes extraordinary women such as Samantha Cristoforetti the astronaut, Ilaria Capua the scientist, Sandra Savaglio,  Giuseppina Maria Nicolini Mayor of Lampedusa. At Casato Prime Donne each of them has left a quotation that has been inscribed on a travertine block and put next pieces of contemporary art by young Tuscan artists. The Auteur trail winds its way through the Brunello vineyards and around the winery and during the past few years has become a meditation itinerary as well as an example of land art.

The winning photograph will also remain forever exhibited inside the Ilda Bartoloni Hall- she was the journalist to whom we owe the format of this award – together with the 17 other winning images of previous editions. A spectacular panorama of the Brunello and Orcia wine territories as seen by the greatest landscape photographers, who have all been struck by the image a lady grape picker or an ethereal sunrise amidst the fog, or by a vineyard in autumn, or by a solitary cypress tree alone on a hill. A thousand  fascinating aspects of these territories in the southern part of Tuscany where the wonderful Brunello and Orcia wines are made and that present us every day with this show of a harmonious meeting between nature and man, who with respect has modelled it.
