Riserva 2013 – Eric Guido

BRUNELLO RISERVA 2013 TASTED BY ERIC GUIDO VINOUS

Riserva 2013 - Eric Guido 2

2013, A VINTAGE THAT INITIALLY DIDN’T REVEAL ITSELF BUT THEN ITS SUPERIOR ELEGANCE AND LONGEVITY COMPARED TO BRUNELLOS FROM HOT VINTAGES, SHONE TROUGH. ERIC GUIDO TASTES IT AGAIN AND LIKES IT

The story of the 2013 harvest is rather unique. That year the winter was rainy and snowy, the spring very rainy. Consequently the  vegetative cycle of the vine was long and the ripening of the grapes was very slow thanks to the cool temperatures in September. The newly born future Brunello did not impress the technicians too much. Therefore the  experts judged it a 4-star vintage and therefore of a lower level compared to the 2012 vintage. However, during the barrel ageing, the wine revealed all its potential and in the following years its greater class always became more evident by outclassing the 2012 vintage.

THE CURIOUS FATE OF BRUNELLOS FROM COOLER VINTAGES THAT SHOW THEIR BEST SIDE AFTER YEARS

A situation similar to the 2018 harvest, also coming from a cool and rainy year. Some tasters considered it “not concentrated enough” but perhaps, with time, it will reveal great longevity and finesse, rewarding those who appreciated its excellent acid structure.

Perhaps, precisely to understand the evolution over time of the vintages of Brunello produced in cool and rainy years, Eric Guido editor of Vinous, Antonio Galloni’s prestigious portal, wanted to taste the 2013 Brunello Riserva again.

WHY TASTE BRUNELLO RISERVA 2013 NOW

For the record, I list here the opinions expressed by the main international critics on this wine at the time of its release: 94 Wine Advocate – Robert Parker, 95 Wine Enthusiast – TOP 5 BRUNELLO RISERVA, 93 James Suckling, 90 Wine Spectator and 16/20 Jancis Robinson. Six years later, Vinous gives a rating of 92 and comments on it with a very fascinating tactile description of all the sensations.

“Mentholated freshness sets the stage for notes of sweet tobacco, cocoa, brown spice and dried black cherry, as the dark and alluring 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva evolves in the glass. This washes across the palate with textures of pure silk, displaying a measured inner sweetness and depths of rich red fruits, complicated by balsamic spice and hints of espresso bean. It finishes long and structured, with fine-grained wood tannins and a lingering bitter tinge. This is a more hedonistic and oak-influenced Riserva from Donatella Cinelli Colombini, yet balance is expertly maintained.”
