Michael Godel is among the foreign wine critics who know Montalcino best. He often participates in Benvenuto Brunello and the Tuscan wine previews and has visited hundreds of wineries in this area. He loves Sangiovese but also greatly appreciates the Foglia Tonda variety for its acidic richness which makes the wines long-lived and fresh.

Our importer in Ontario, Bernard Stramwasser Les Sommelier sent us 11 sheets and 11 scores from Michael Godel on Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino, Leone Rosso Doc Orcia and 6 vintages of Cenerentola (based on Sangiovese and Foglia Tonda) from 2021 to 2001. They are published on Wine Align, the portal of the major Canadian wine experts.

BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO DOCG 2020 SCORE 93/100

Godel appreciated this wine and the respectful way in which it was vinified and matured, allowing the vintage to express itself without intervening in the cellar. The result is a good richness of extracts and a natural balance.

BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO PRIME DONNE 2020 SCORE 94/100

Brunello Prime Donne is selected during a blind tasting by a panel of 4 tasters, sommelier Daniela Scrobogna, wine expert Astrid Schwarz and two MWs: Madeleine Stenwreth and Rosemary George. The wine has more tannins than the other Brunello due to the French wood in which it matured. In Godel’s opinion it is a classic Brunello with good aging potential.…

Brunello Prime Donne 2019 wins the 5 Grappoli by Bibenda and the 4 Viti by the AIS Vitae guide. This is a wine that has obtained widespread approval from critics and consumers all over the world.

The Brunello Riserva 2018 obtains the 4 Viti plus the gem from the Sommeliers of the largest Italian organization with a stratospheric score. A recognition that echoes Donatella Cinelli Colombini’s predilection for this wine <<I offer it at the table as often as I can because it coincides with my idea of ​​a great Brunello>>.

The party is completed by the AIS award also for the Doc Orcia Cenerentola 2019. It is nice to receive the invitation to the most charming Wine event organized for the award ceremony of the wines awarded 5 grappoli ( bunches)  in the BIBENDA 2025 guide. An event with an exclusive direction and full of affection dedicated to Italian producers. Franco Ricci, the great boss of Bibenda FIS – Italian Sommelier Foundation, calls it the Embrace Festival because it allows the best producers from all over Italy to meet again and share a beautiful moment.

NUMBERS OF THE BIBENDA GUIDE

The BIBENDA GUIDE is consulted by a million people. Its 27th edition 2025 contains 2,200 wineries and 15,000 wines. A complete repertoire of Italian production told and explained with care and precision. The award ceremony for the wines who have received the maximum score consisting of 5 grappoli (bunches) will take place on Saturday 16 November 2024 in the lounge of the Hotel Rome Cavalieri with the tasting of all the awarded wines.
