This is a curious friendship because Violante Cinelli Colombini was born and works in Montalcino, while Sofia Ruhne is Swedish but she too was brought up in Tuscany. Sofia was only seven years old when her family who were in the waterborne transport business when her parents Mats and Birgitta decided to buy their first vineyards in Tuscany.
Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti Classico are two fine red wines that have made Tuscany famous all over the world.  Two appellations that use the most representative variety in Tuscany, Sangiovese, creating wines of different territorial identity but both high quality wines with great cellaring ability.

The Ruhne family buys the estate called Terreno in Chianti Classico in 1988 but also the “The Winery Hotel” is part of the property and today they are both run by Sofia.  In this hotel situated in Stockholm guest can see all the phases of wine production thanks to the fresh grapes arriving from Tuscany. <<Sweden’s first combined urban winery and concept hotel >>. An innovative and very ambitious project who’s objective is to increase wine culture and the number of impassioned wine lovers in Sweden.

The friendship between Violante and Sofia comes from their passion for fine red wines. A friendship that has deepened because both believe in respect for the environment:  the Azienda Terreno produces only organic wines and those by Violante –from Fattoria del Colle and Casato Prime Donne are certified since 2018.

From their friendship comes the idea to propose to the members of the two estates’ wine clubs a mixed crate with wines from both wineries.

TO KNOW MORE ABOUT CASATO PRIME DONNE IN MONTALCINO

The Montalcino wines propose from the Casato Prime Donne winery in Montalcino a property that already in 1592 belonged to Donatella Cinelli Colombini’ ancestors and where, in recent centuries, her great-grandparents took their wives on their honeymoon. Surrounding the ancient building there are 17 hectares of Sangiovese vineyard that since 2018 are CERTIFIED ORGANIC and therefore on the label of Rosso di Montalcino there is the leaf symbol of organic cultivation.

The winery is the first in Italy with an all female staff, a project started in 1998 that changed the name of the property; originally it was just Casato. The Casato Prime Donne is a symbol for female oenology and has shown that, even without great muscles, it is possible to make great wines and achieve international success.

Rosso di Montalcino 2018 – Sangiovese 100% – comes from a rainy spring and a warm September. The rain during flowering reduced the number and size of the bunches, the sun during ripening reduced the calibre of the berries and softened the skins of the grapes that at harvest time were able to yield to the wine the noble substances. The manual grape picking took place on 24-25 September. Ageing for 6-12 months took place in 5-7 hectolitres French oak tonneaux and 45,000 bottles were produced. So far the important ratings are : 92 VINOUS – Antonio Galloni, RED MEDAL of the Merano Wine Festival.

Rosso di Montalcino is perfect to accompany pasta, cold cuts and cheeses, and with a barbecue. It has structure, harmony and freshness.

Brunello di Montalcino Prime Donne 2016 – 100% Sangiovese – has been awarded with the following ratings:

• Robert Parker/Wine Advocate: 96
• Vinous Antonio Galloni: 95
• James Suckling: 96

The grape harvest took place on 28-29 September and October 1st with handpicked grapes.

The vinification occurred in truncated cone shaped unlined temperature controlled concrete vats, open on top and with a mechanized punching of the cap, while the barrel ageing took place in 5 and 7 hl French oak tonneau produced by 3 artisan workshops. Brunello Prime Donne is produced in about 6.000 bottles and it is apt for a long cellaring of 30-40 years and more,  laying the bottles down, in a cold and dark place.

It is a gastronomic wine that must be matched with important dishes like big roasts, aged cheese, game. During the service on the table, it has to be at room temperature (18-20°C) and it has to be tasted in clear, balloon shaped glassware. It is best to open the wine one hour before serving and to decant it so as to favour an intense oxygenation.

The climatic trend shows the typical characteristics of the best Brunello vintages with rainy winter and spring that have hydrated the soil, very hot July that blocked a vegetative development that had started very quickly, and August with thunderstorms alternating with hot days, September with a very strong thermal excursion between night and day.

On September 14th  2015 when our wine consultant Valérie Lavigne arrived, the grapes were almost ready for harvest and presented themselves in the best way. Valérie had with her an exceptional guest, the dean of the Bordeaux Faculty of Oenology,  Denis Dubourdieu, one of the most powerful and feared men in the whole wine world. Professor Dubourdieu had only one word to describe the vineyards at Casato Prime Donne after a walk around inspection  <<impeccable>>, that is perfect.

 

TO KNOW MORE ABOUT TERRENO AZIENDA RUHNE IN CHIANTI CLASSICO

Terreno is located in the immediate surroundings of the village of Greve in Chianti. Here the we – the Ruhne family- began making wine in 1988, and we committed ourselves to developing our own style, capable of enhancing the dynamic and pragmatic character of Swedish culture, to harmonize it with respect for the centuries-old Chianti traditions.
Terreno is now managed by the second generation of the family, Sofia Ruhne, it has been entirely organic since 2014, spread over a total area of 150 hectares, 20 of which are dedicated to vineyards and 10 to olive groves, with the remainder consisting mainly of woods. The twenty hectares of vineyards are divided into three parts. The vineyards around the manor house are located at an altitude of about three hundred meters in a south and southwest direction on the right side bank of the Greve River. Here live our oldest vines, planted in 1980, those we use for our complex wine for cellaring, Terreno Chianti Classico ASofia.
In Bonille the vines grow at an altitude of four hundred meters in a south-west direction on hand-built terraces. The vines are planted at higher density in a dry soil with a lot of galestro and have to fight hard to survive. From these we get a concentrated fruit that brings structure to our wines.
The winery is open to the public and next door there is a farmhouse and a restaurant (April to October) that offers Tuscan and Scandinavian dishes prepared with manual care with vegetables from the organic garden.

Obtained from pure Sangiovese grapes and matured in medium-sized oak barrels.

This wine is the flagship wine of the Terreno estate. Sofia and the entire Ruhne family are proud of it and entrust this wine with the task of revealing with simplicity the deep territorial roots of the estate.

Chianti Classico 2014 won the award for “best organic red wine” in the Vinodic Wine Challenge 2017.

 

TO KNOW MORE ABOUT CHIANTI CLASSICO RISERVA 2017 BIOLOGICO

It was precisely the tasting of a bottle of Chianti Classico Riserva produced in by the Terreno vineyards that prompted the Ruhne family to invest in Tuscany. It is an important wine suitable for great occasions. It contains Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. Matured two years in oak barrels and aged three months in bottle.

The Chianti Classico Riserva by Terreno was reviewed in Decanter magazine, and received the score of 83 / 100 p and the following description:

“Hedonistic nose of spice, chocolate, forest floor, tomato and cooked fruit. Modern but deeply attractive nonetheless with a rich, seductive quality to the fruit, ripe tannins and a moreish quality that is hard to resist. Not the most witty wine but one that would welcome you home after a hard day at the office.”

ASofia is the first wine produced by Sofia Ruhne when she took over the management of her father’s company.

ASofia is a wine that has won awards in both Sweden and Italy. In the Italian guide Vinibuoni d’Italia 2018, it received the highest score, four out of four stars, and it received the prestigious title “a wine not to be missed”. In addition, it was awarded the silver medal in the Vinordic Wine Challenge 2019, an internationally recognized competition.

Obtained from only Sangiovese grapes from the oldest vineyard on the farm. Matured for 32 months in oak barrels.
