2012-2013 COMPARISON OF TWO VINTAGES
Every year, during the month of January, a commission made up of wine makers, sommeliers and wine critics comes to Montalcino and tastes the wine from the last harvest giving a rating that goes from one to 5 stars. The best Brunello vintages are given 5 stars. Sometimes though when the wine is ready to be sold, after five or six years, the opinion of the wine critics changes. In fact the Brunello 2013 was rated four stars straight after the harvest, when released got better write ups than the 2012 vintage that was a five star vintage.
Obviously, these are two great Brunello but they have two different characters, if you are Brunello lovers, you can have fun comparing and maybe send us a couple of photos and a comment so we can share on social media.
The Brunello Riserva by Donatella Cinelli Colombini is produced in the vineyards around Casato Prime Donne a Montalcino. This property belonged to Donatella’s ancestors already 400 years ago, and today has a winery that is the first in Italy to be staffed only by women.
BRUNELLO 2012 RISERVA – CASATO PRIME DONNE MONTALCINO
This is a “Mediterranean “ Brunello where the aroma recall small red fruits but also exotic spices. In the mouth it is of great impact with silky tannins and an evident ripe fruit. Pleasantly long lasting.
In 2012 the winter was cold and snowy. In the summer it was very hot right until September when the temperatures went down and the ripening of the clusters slowed down. The grapes for Brunello Riserva were picked for first, from September 12th to the 14th, choosing the clusters one by one in the vineyard called Ardita that is the best at Casato Prime Donne in Montalcino. For the fermentation we used autochthonous yeast chosen in our winery. Vinification took place in concrete vats where the temperature was controlled. The wine aged for 3 years in 5-7 hl oak tonneaux and was not filtered.
BRUNELLO 2013 RISERVA – CASATO PRIME DONNE MONTALCINO
This Brunello is very fine, vertical and deep. The aroma is complex and recalls ripe small red fruits but also coffee chocolate and tobacco. This wine is harmonious, smooth, and last pleasantly at length in the mouth.
Brunello Riserva 2013 comes from a vintage with a rainy winter and a cool summer. Rainfall disturbed the flowering of the vines and this diminished the size and number of the clusters. Consequently the 2013 harvest was scarce. The ripening of the grapes was slow and homogenous. The harvest was done by hand and the fermentation lasted 14 days. Subsequently the wine stayed for another 20 days in contact with the grape skins. The ageing lasted 3 years in 5-7 Hl oak tonneaux from three different French tonnelleries.
