JACQUARD METHOD LOOMING

The Jacquard system comes from the 19th century and makes it possible to have the same design on both sides of the cloth. Based on the warp and weft, it is possible to have a tablecloth with a different colour on either side.
In other words, with one tablecloth it is like having two.

HOW TO MEASURE THE TABLECLOTH FOR YOUR TABLE

Etiquette advises two ways: to measure the dimension of the table top and add the amount that drops until the knees of those seated. Or to measure the maximum length of the tablecloth making sure that the corners do not touch the ground. An elegant tablecloth must never touch the floor. The second solution is more elegant but less comfortable, and however the choice depends on the style of the home. Those who have modern furniture will find the shorter tablecloth more apt. In any case, in the measuring it is important to consider 5-10cm extra because natural fibres do shrink a little the first time they are washed.
The ToscanaLovers stores – boutiques for the best handicraft – have a vast array of colours, designs and sizes for their tablecloths. You can see these in the website, so you can choose what is best suited to give a touch of class to your dinner.

THE TABLECLOTH DESIGNS

The REFINED ANPHORA DESIGN and the floral motifs, inspired by the Renaissance period.
This is available in green, mustard and red-purple.
The TRADITIONAL DAMASK DESIGN is inspired by the arabesque pattern in use since the Greek-Roman epoch, and is renewed with floral elements.

HAND LOOMED FABRICS

In Tuscany the production of fabrics has a long and prestigious tradition. In the thirteenth century, Lucca was the first city to establish itself as a centre producer of fabrics of great wealth and refined design. With the Renaissance, the art of manual weaving spread to Florence and then throughout the region with the creation of fabrics in linen, silk and wool. In the eighteenth century, there were fifty looms in operation in Siena; typical of this area is the “canvas of Pienza” with the characteristic small diamonds. Successively, with the invention of mechanical or semi-mechanical frames – first in France and in England and then in Italy – the weavers art underwent a radical transformation all over the world. At the beginning of the 20th century, only 20 manual looms remained in Siena and they were destined to extinction after the First World War. Today, in Tuscany, there are still some small workshops, with semi-mechanical frames; the cloths proposed by Toscana Lovers come from these.
Embroidery from our region has a long history too; they spread during the 14th century and they were done by men, except for in Siena where they were done by widows and unmarried mothers.
In our store we try to emphasize also another Tuscan tradition: decorated borders with images of animals in pairs, fruit or flowers often inspired by marquetry, or by historical flooring such as that in the Duomo in Siena.

CHOSEN FOR YOU BY TOSCANA LOVERS

The Toscana Lovers stores are boutiques who sell the best Tuscan handicraft.  They are situated in Siena, Cortona and Bagno Vignoni. In the stores, other than cloths made on the loom with traditional and modern patterns, knives made in Scarperia, soaps made by the second oldest Tuscan producer, who uses bronze mould and aromatizes with natural essences, are sold. Ceramic objects made in the historic region of Montelupo Fiorentino in shabby chic shapes, majolica from Montalcino with Medieval designs … Many proposals waiting for you in the stores, and some of which you can see on the online store.
