It’s difficult to stand out in an international wine market overcrowded with bottles. Especially with a young appellation like the Orcia DOC, and even more so with a native grape variety abandoned for over a century.
This is why Donatella Cinelli Colombini is happy every time her Cenerentola wine achieves a good result, like the 92/100 awarded by Wine Spectator for the 2019 vintage.
The Orcia DOC was born on February 14, 2000, in the high hills of southern Tuscany, nestled between the Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano territories. Sandwiched between two important and famous sisters, the Orcia DOC is in a favourable position for vineyards but difficult to establish a commercial niche.
THE NAME CENERENTOLA INDICATES THE PRINCELY DESTINY OF THIS WINE
That’s why Donatella named her wine Orcia Cenerentola, betting on a native grape variety that almost no one cultivated anymore—Foglia Tonda—but which seemed to her an ideal partner for Sangiovese. The goal was to produce a wine with distinctive characteristics, capable of achieving success at the highest levels. Therefore thanks to her passionate grape-growers and formidable cellar women, the training system, harvest timing, wine making technique, and barrel type were gradually perfected. A ten-year effort with stellar results at Fattoria del Colle in Trequanda.
Today, the Orcia Cenerentola DOC receives scores between 91/100 and 93/100 from the most important international press. It is considered one of the most elegant red wines of the new generation. “Seeing the description of the Cenerentola between two Sassicaia gives me the shivers,” says Donatella Cinelli Colombini, leafing through Wine Spectator, the bible of the most discerning wine lovers around the world.

The masterful description of the wine is written by Bruce Sanderson, Senior Editor of Wine Spectator: “This beautifully ripe red is refined, complex, and ready to drink. Flavours of plum, blackberry, iron, tobacco, cedar, and resinous oak are supported by dense, dusty tannins. The finish is dry, echoing the spicy accents. Sangiovese and Foglia Tonda. Drink now through 2033.”
