Brunello IOsonoDonatella 2016 first wine with a pedigree
A fine wine is like a work of art whose value increases when its path can be traced from the execution onwards. Here is the Brunello with pedigree
Donatella Cinelli Colombini, art historian winemaker, wanted her most exclusive wine to be like an author’s painting and has prepared a certificate in which to note every change of hand of the bottle after leaving the cellar. A document that tells the story of wine after the stage of production and also places the right emphasis on who owns it because, it is well known, how the presence of “excellent names” increases its value.
The first bottle with a “pedigree“, therefore with the “family tree” of the owners, is a Brunello di Montalcino 2016 IOsonoDonatella.
It is a very small numbered series of only 180 copies. It begins its marketing in February 2023 inside a luxury box which also contains the 2013 and 2015 vintages of the same wine. Together they form a vertical destined for great wine lovers and collectors. The presence of the certificate on the IOsonoDonatella 2016 is the last touch that increases its prestige.
IOsonoDonatella IS BORN AT CASATO PRIME DONNE IN MONTALCINO
IOsonoDonatella is a super selection of Brunello produced in small series only in the best vintages. It is obtained from Sangiovese grapes from the Casato Prime Donne vineyards in Montalcino at an altitude of 225 meters on Pliocene soils with a prevalence of clays and marine sands. It was vinified and aged in barrels in the same company with very careful manual care. This property belonged to the ancestors of Donatella Cinelli Colombini four hundred years ago and now houses the first all-female Italian winery. A historical place, therefore, with a sensitivity and a touch of modern elegance.
IOsonoDonatella DONATELLA CINELLI COLOMBINI’S SELECTION
In this wine Donatella Cinelli Colombini tells her story. There are precise references to her past as an art historian expert in medieval goldsmithing. The great goldsmiths produced liturgical objects and seals. The latter served to authenticate the signature with small bas-reliefs often in signet rings. For this reason, the glass of the IOsonoDonatella bottle is decorated with glitter that forms a ring with the gold Donatella logo in the centre, like a gothic seal.
The IOsonoDonatella selection was bottled for the first time in 2010 when she realized she had realized her dream of producing a great red wine of international standing. Donatella Cinelli Colombini comes from a historic family of Brunello producers and, since 1998, has had her own company, which bears her name. After the 2010 harvest, the selection was bottled in the 2012, 2013 and 2015 vintages.
LUXORY BOX WITH THE IOsonoDONATELLA VERTICAL
For the first time, IOsonoDonatella Brunello is not marketed in a single box (the pyramid that opens like a fan) but in a 3-bottle luxury box containing the 2013, 2015 and 2016 vintages. One 4-star vintage and two 5-star vintages to offer enthusiasts an unforgettable experience of the great aging Brunello.
IOsonoDonatella BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO DOCG 2016 TECHNICAL SHEET
In 2016 the vines had a vegetative cycle (which we could call the grape pregnancy) 15 days longer than normal. This gave rise to an authentic masterpiece in the vineyards of Casato Prime Donne. The grapes, with very small berries, developed an extraordinary richness in polyphenols during the very slow maturation. This is why Brunello 2016 is both powerful and silky, pleasant and at the same time structured to defy time.
VINEYARD: Montalcino, Casato Prime Donne.
CLIMATE: Very rainy winter and spring. Hot summer interrupted by heavy storms that brought down the temperature and hydrated the soil.
Veraison began on 20 July. In the maturation phase, the sudden change in temperature between night and day created the ideal conditions for a slow and gradual maturation and for the synthesis of perfumes.
GRAPES: 100% Sangiovese.
HARVEST: From 26th to 30th September. Manual harvest with choice of bunches in the vineyard and selection of grapes on the sorting table in the cellar. Perfect grapes, with very homogeneous ripening, small bunches and berries. Well lignified grape seeds, soft and easily soluble skins that quickly gave colour and noble materials to the must.
VINIFICATION: Alcoholic fermentation for 15 days in small truncated cone-shaped bare concrete vats equipped with a mechanical plunger. A long maceration with a closed cap followed. Selected yeasts from Casato Prime Donne were used.
AGING IN WOOD: 7 HL French oak tonneaux. Brunello has not undergone filtrations before bottling.
PRODUCTION QUANTITY: 180 bottles.
TASTING – ORGANOLEPTIC ANALYSIS
COLOUR: Bright ruby red. The structure that guarantees the longevity of the wine is evident from the slowness with which it swirls in the glass.
BOUQUET: Complex, fine. The memory of small ripe red fruits, cedar, walnuts is accompanied by notes of coffee, chocolate, tobacco.
TASTE: Extremely, harmonious, concentrated and long. An elegance that satisfies with silky tannins and remains long after the sip.
AT THE TABLE
FOOD PAIRING: Important dishes of meat and aged cheeses. It requires foods with an intense flavour and low fat.
TABLE SERVICE: Room temperature (18-20 °C). White crystal goblets with wide bowl. Uncork a few hours before serving and decant.
CELLARING: 30 years and beyond. Keep the bottles flat, in the dark and in the cold. Donatella Cinelli Colombini’s cellar replaces the corks, certifying the operation 20 years after bottling.
