MY RECENTLY AWARDED WINES
BRUNELLO BUT NOT ONLY, ALSO MY ORCIA DOC WINES, THE IGT IL DRAGO E LE 8 COLOMBE, THE ROSSO DI MONTALCINO AND THE CHIANTI SUPERIORE AWARDED WITH SCORES ABOVE 90/100
by Donatella Cinelli Colombini
Receiving ratings above 90 points from the major international newspapers is always a pleasure but paradoxically happiness is greater when the judgment concerns a wine other than the TOP ones because it means that the winery offers its customers a very high level of quality across the entire range . In short, it is a sign of the brand’s strength and a confirmation of its choices in the vineyards. In fact, the vineyards are the major economic and organizational commitment of every small but ambitious producer like me.
Here I show you some of the scores that have made me happiest in the last few months. Evidently the 94/100 on my Brunello Prime Donne 2018 (and the 93/100 on the Brunello) also filled me with pride and I am grateful to Monica Larner for having well reviewed my wine in Wine Advocate Robert Parker. Incidentally, Master Sommelier John Szabo and Canadian journalist Michael Godel also gave 94/100 to my 2018 Brunello on “Wine Align”.
But here I would like to tell you about my other labels reviewed in the last few months
VINOUS AWARDS 93+ TO CENERENTOLA DOC ORCIA AND 92 TO THE IGT IL DRAGO E LE 8 COLOMBE
Cenerentola Doc Orcia 2018 also obtained 91/100 in the Falstaff Trophy 2023.
On the same wine, the comment by Eric Guido, a young but very good taster from the Vinous portal by Antonio Galloni, is one that pleases the heart <<Cenerentola 2018 is aromatically stunning. It has a dark and seductive bouquet of plum and cherry sauce complemented by cloves, cinnamon and cedar shavings; a hint of undergrowth grounds the experience on earth. It glides on the palate like pure silk, shiny and elegant>>.
The description of the IGT Supertuscan is equally seductive << Dark and brooding in the glass, Il Drago e le 8 Colombe 2019 rumbles with a blend of plum sauce, dusty dried flowers, rosemary and crushed stone. This soothes with its silky, round textures and ripe red and black fruits. Stimulating acidity and hints of tart citrus add a hint of tension towards the finish. Finale with chalky tannins that add balance without tiring the palate, while the nuances of balsamic spices slowly taper off>> Eric is definitely very very poetic.
CHIANTI SUPERIORE 90/100 FROM WINE ENTHUSIAST
Wine Enthusiast also gave 92/100 to Il Drago e le 8 Colombe 2019 and awarded my two Brunello 2018 with 94 and 93/100 respectively, but the most exciting result for me is the judgment of 90/100 on Chianti Superiore 2020. Chianti is the largest Tuscan appellation with a production of 120 million bottles a year. Getting noticed in this sea of Chianti is really difficult but mine succeeded.
90/100 FOR THE LEONE ROSSO DOC ORCIA 2019 BY JAMES SUCKLING
<< A juicy and fruity red with many blackberry and cherry characters. It also recalls vanilla. Medium-structured body, soft tannins and fruity finish>> is the description by James Sucking, a great lover of Tuscan blend wines, on the Leone Rosso Doc Orcia 2019 which contains Sangiovese and Merlot. Other very positive judgments concern Cenerentola and Rosso di Montalcino respectively 92 and 91 out of a hundred.
91/100 TO ROSSO DI MONTALCINO 2020
Still regarding the Rosso di Montalcino Doc 2020 I received a message from gismondionwine with the word <<Cheers>> and inside a score of 91/100 with a nice description << the wild cherry and the black raspberry are kissed by smoked stones and wrapped in evident tannins through a spicy finish. Still quite young, this Rosso has time ahead>>
