Brunello di Montalcino 2010 here comes the vintage of the century
Donatella Cinelli Colombini is pleased to present a masterpiece in the bottle from the Casato Prime Donne winery in Montalcino. A wine that has just come out of the cellar and already hides a powerful structure in an incredibly elegant, enjoyable and deep harmony. In thirty or fifty years it will be a masterpiece of refinement.
This magic of nature grows only in Montalcino and only if the climate is favourable.
Only few territories in the world are capable of producing a great wine with only one grape variety like Burgundy with its Pinot noir. Montalcino is one of them. Sangiovese grapes find here the perfect soil and climate to ripen slowly and completely.
What’s special about the 2010 vintage? Winter and spring with a lot of rain. A very hot July. The ripening was slow and steady so that the technological ripeness (juice) went hand in hand with the polyphenolic one (skin). The grape bunches that were arriving in the cellar were perfect, the dream of every winemaker.
Type: dry red denomination Brunello di Montalcino DOCG
Production area: Tuscany, Montalcino, Casato Prime Donne
Climate: Winter and spring extremely full of snow and rainfalls that deeply hydrated the soil. Thanks to this stock of water vines withstood well a very hot July, and in August the grape colouring was difficult because of a lacking of water stress. Quite exceptional case, grapes reached ripeness while the vines were still in vegetation.
Grape variety: 100% Sangiovese
Grape harvest: manual harvest of the grapes with careful selection of bunches in the vineyard and of the best grapes in the cellar. Small bunches, with thin small grapes and water-soluble skins. Acidity higher than normal with a strong component of malic acid despite the excellent sugar content.
Vinification: In truncated-cone shaped vats open on top. During fermentation must has always been in contact with grape skins and a plunger allowed to submerge the layer of skins without the use of pumps.
Barrel ageing: in 5-7 hl tonneaux for the first year. These small containers are made of french oak handcut with the axe in prestigious handicraft workshops. For the second and third year the ageing continued in 30-40 hl Allier and Slavonian oak barrels.
Quantity produced: 45.000 bottles
Colour: intense ruby red with a bright heart, the wine slowly dances in the glasses thanks to its richness
Aroma: Fine, clean, complex, deep. Clear hints of small red fruits and spices.
Taste: elegant, full, harmonious, soft, long-lasting end that pleasantly lingers in the mouth.
Matching dishes: important meat dishes and aged cheeses.
Way of serving: Room temperature (18 °C). White crystal wine goblets with large cup. Better to open it at least an hour before serving.
Home ageing: 20-30 years and more. Keep the bottles lying down in a dark and cool place. Donatella Cinelli Colombini’s winery changes the corks, certifying the procedure, after 20 years from the bottling.
