A powerful Sangiovese , extremely pleasant , that in the  Rosso di Montalcino expresses at its best the characters of a hot years such as 2017 and the extraordinary Brunello terroir

 

2017 in the vineyards is explained in the words of the Divina Commedia by Dante << guarda il calor del sol che si fa vino>> (Canto 25 of Purgatory). Poetic words that describe a very hot summer where the vines suffered for the draught for month and the grape growers tilled the land to impede that the soil hardened.

A vintage, 2017, that expresses itself at its best in young wines, such as the Rosso di Montalcino, and has among its strong points the Mediterranean vigour and pleasantness. It is in other words a raring, hot, powerful and velvety Sangiovese.

MONTALCINO, TERROIR WHERE SANGIOVESE EXPRESSES ITSELF BEST

Montalcino is, in the world, the territory where Sangiovese expresses itself at its best. An extraordinary territory that makes something extremely difficult happen, in fact it makes it even seem easy: to produce with the same grapes and from the same vines, young wines that are extremely pleasant and elegant, like Rosso di Montalcino, and super premium wines apt for long ageing such as Brunello.

VINTAGE 2017 IN MONTALCINO AND IN EUROPE

In Europe, the 2017 vintage will be remembered as the scarcest and most troublesome of the last 50 years because of a frost at the end of April, and because of a dry and torrid summer, and finally because of the hailstorm in September. A wild climatic situation that miraculously missed Montalcino where the only difference with other vintages was the beginning of the harvest within the first 15 days of September.

ROSSO DI MONTALCINO DOC 2017

TYPE: dry red.

PRODUCTION AREA: Toscana, Montalcino, Casato Prime Donne.

VINTAGE CHARACTERISTICS: Mild winter with few cold days except for a deep frost at the end of April that luckily did not make the temperatures go below zero. The vines budded early, and the flowering, the transformation of flower into grape berries and the veraison all happened quickly because of the high temperatures right from June. The drought and the heat peaked in the first half of August and only in September was there a net decrease in temperatures thanks to the storms that hydrated the vines and grapes

GRAPE TYPE : 100% Sangiovese .
GRAPE HARVEST: From September 4th – 14th. The sound grapes were handpicked and chosen in the vineyard and on sorting tables in the winery.
VINIFICATION: in truncated-cone shaped stainless steel and cement open vats, that have a system for punching the cap and temperature control. Indigenous selected yeasts from Casato Prime Donne.

BARREL AGEING: 6-12 months in 5-7 hl oak tonneaux.
QUANTITY PRODUCED: 25,000 bottles.

ORGANOLEPTIC CHARACTERISTICS AND WAY OF SERVING

COLOUR: very intense and brilliant ruby red.
AROMA: fine rich, well expressed, recalls ripe small red berries, spices and dark flowers such as violets.
TASTE: full, harmonious, pleasant, the tannins are silky and well balanced by the richness in fruit. The persistence is pleasant and lengthy.
ANALISIS: alcohol …% Vol.; Tot. Ac. … g/l; Vol. Ac…mg/l; Extract … g/l; SO² Tot … mg/l
MATCHING DISHES: very versatile, magnificently well matched with noble meats or with simple meals of cheeses and cold cuts, serving though at a slightly lower temperature.
WAY OF SERVING: serve at room temperature (16-18°C), use wide tulip shaped crystal wine goblets.
HOME STORAGE: all the red wines from Montalcino are all apt for long ageing but the Rosso di Montalcino is destined to be consumed young. The bottles are to be kept lying down in a cool and dark place.
