WHAT DOES WINE DESTINATION MEAN
Fattoria del Colle is a wine destination that attracts those desiring real and different experiences with wine. Here I explain what it is and why it is liked so much
Those who think that only wine superstars attract visitors are wrong. Obviously, the more that winery is important and exclusive, the easier it is for them to attract visitors. Any wine lover, from the remotest place on the earth, will pack their bags and set off if they receive an invitation to visit Lafite or Romanée Conti. But the wine lover that comes to Tuscany maybe finds fascinating the idea of spending a day at Fattoria del Colle experiencing different activities that can enrich their knowledge in an old and authentic location. Mostly because they have the possibility of enjoying unique and moving moments.
WINE DESTINATIONS IN ITALY AND IN THE WORLD
Let us begin with some facts so as to understand the importance of standing out. If you look for wine destination on Google you will find nearly 150 million content pages. In the first page there are many lists and it is worthwhile to read them so as to understand what attracts a wine lover to one area with respect to another.
Vine Pair proposes a list with the first 10 wine destinations in the world. In first position is Paso Robles in California, followed by Valle de Guadalupe in Mexico and Piedmont in Virginia.
Europeanbestdestinations.com puts l’Alentajo in Portugal, followed by Bordeaux and the Valle del Douro on the podium.
Booking puts the Italian wine regions in a row for the first three positions Valdobbiadene, Barbaresco e Bolgheri.
WHAT MUST A WINE DESTINATION HAVE
As you can see the tourist wine destination are present all over the world and so it is not enough to offer a tour through the barrels with an explanation of the production method of the appellation of the area, to intercept visitors. One must concentrate on what makes the winery stand out. Wineries have very different characters: some of them have strong points in the prestige and in the old beauty, as in Champagne, in other cases the major attractions are the new facilities of the star architects as in Chile.
The fact is that each destination has three requirements: a unique character, fame, and organization of services other than the network that sells them. Obviously if you are in a region like Tuscany, known for its wine, or in a prestigious appellation like Barolo, it make a difference, but any winery can structure itself as a wine destination and offer visitors unforgettable moments. Today I wish to present Fattoria del Colle to you, not to show off, but invite you to come and spend at least a day in the Doc Orcia, region, the most beautiful wine in the world, and to its intimate gluttony.
WINE DESTINATION FATTORIA DEL COLLE: WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT
Let’s start from its strong point: Fattoria del Colle is a still intact small rural hamlet, in which the centuries have overlapped with small tweaks, without upheaval. It feels real. Even the wonderful surrounding landscape seems to have come out of a medieval fresco. Around there are olive groves and vineyards. The underground barrel ageing area of the 16th century villa hides a hermitage which is where I store the fist vintages of my Brunello. There is also an old donkey’s stable where I keep my very own collection. From the staircase in the last room it is possible to go up to the loft where my husband Carlo keeps his Vin Santo casks.
WINERY AND VINEYARDS: WHAT TO SEE AND WHAT TO DO
The fermentation, bottling and refinement areas are the result of a renovation that, during the day, makes them almost invisible. At night the corten forest, designed by Elisa Boldi, which surrounds the buildings, lights up like in fairy tales.
Inside there is an immersive room where visitors feel and see what happens in the vineyards during the four seasons and four moments of the day. A way to suggest to everyone to look around carefully because nature has different sounds and colours and must be heard, sniffed and looked at with curiosity.
HIKING AND SELFIE WITH WINE
Here, after this experience, the hiking in the vineyards (2.5km with educational signs and route arrows) can be experienced more intensely. Or where the photo safari becomes a starting point for creative selfies. Don’t miss the mural painted by Silvia Argilli with Cinderella in homage to the main wine made at Fattoria del Colle.
The experiences with wine follow a daily program that includes n itinerant tasting with a visit to the cellar and vineyards in which to learn about the characteristics of Sangiovese and the very rare Tuscan variety Foglia Tonda.
There is an experience with cheese where you find out that you can still make it at home. For those with historical interests we offer a guided tour of the Chapel, to the sixteenth-century villa and the historic gardens, also with small tastings and many funny anecdotes.
EXPERIENCES WITH WINE TO HAVE FUN AND LEARN
Of course it is also possible to eat while having experiences with typical cheeses and cold cuts. In addition to traditional dishes such as bread soup, pappardelle, scottiglia, Chianina beef strips … there are amazing things like wild valdorcian herbs that allow you to taste the same salad as 500 years ago.
But let’s go back to the experiences with wine. The most experienced have the possibility of important tastings such as the Brunello verticals with many vintages or the horizontal tastings with wines of the same year but obtained from different varieties. Those who want to try something more creative can become “winemaker for a day” and create their own Supertuscan wine to label, cork and take home to taste with friends. The young wine hospitality staff will be very happy to organize these experiences even if you book just a short time in advance.
WINE TASTINGS AND MUCH MORE – DAILY AND WEEKLY PROGRAMS
To all this is added a program of different activities depending on the days of the week: the excursion to the Casato Prime Donne winery in Montalcino to see how Brunello is born, the experience in the woods with the bows and arrows, or the comparative tasting that teaches how to recognize extra virgin olive oil and the brief lesson to learn how to make pinci, a typical fresh Sienese pasta
This is the Fattoria del Colle wine destination where everyone can find the activity that stimulates them the most or the right corner to sip their glass of Brunello in front of an enchanting landscape while the only sound is the wind that moves the leaves of the trees.
