The 2019 harvest is to be considered one of the best Montalcino harvests with perfect grapes for the production of a great aging Brunello. The 2020 vintage, however, is reminiscent of the splendid 2015. They are two vintages that are part of the “Vineyard first” project where we make every effort to pick the grapes as soon as they are ready and we develop a system to choose the harvest day based on the tasting of the grapes and on the day in which the quantity of total polyphenols begins to decrease.

The grapes, perfectly ripe, healthy, with well-lignified seeds and the typical crunchiness of the best Sangiovese. Even better analytical data compared to 2019: smaller sized berries, higher extractable polyphenols and a good acid content. Very colourful and fragrant musts.

There are vintages that seem born to produce wines capable of defying time and 2019 is one of them. These are the harvests in which the grapes arrive in the cellar so perfect that they don’t need anything, just attention and patience. This vintage in the Riserva version finds its most exciting expression due to the silky harmony that hides a powerful structure

CURIOSITIES ABOUT THESE PREVIEW WINES
In 2020, the year of Covid, there was a spring frost (18-23 March) which drastically reduced the grapes in the vineyards. After a mild and arid winter, June was very rainy while from mid-July to the end of August the heat was never interrupted by storms. The good weather continued in September until the harvest when the disturbances began to arrive. The rain circled around leaving Casato Prime Donne dry until September 25th when the harvest was almost completed. That day there was a real downpour but, fortunately, almost all the grapes were already in the cellar.
In 2019 the winter was mild and arid, with a very rainy spring which delayed budding and then disturbed flowering, resulting in the open and small nature of the bunches. The summer was hot but not very hot and interrupted by some storms. Disturbances that continued into September when the nights became very cold.
