La Cantina di Paul, in other words the wine suite
From the Campo carpenters and from Paolo Valdastri connoisseur of worldwide wines here is a bottle rack that every wine lover will want
Seen for you by Donatella Cinelli Colombini
It resembles a giant treasure chest so refined are the finishing touches and the technology necessary to protect the precious contents from light, heat and most of all from thieves. This wine suite is called La Cantina di Paul, a small room for excellent bottles completely different from those we are used to seeing in luxury restaurants or in magazines for the furnishings of billionaires homes. Those are in fact iron and crystal bunkers, functional but decidedly bleak, la cantina di Paul is a masterpiece of cabinetmaking handicraft, a wooden treasure chest carved and inlaid, about two metres by two which conveys cheerfulness and the love of wine. It is born form a meeting of people with different origins and cultures.
Above all Paul the person to whom the cabinet is dedicated. He is an antique dealer who taught the Campo master carpenters from Cappella Maggiore near Treviso, the taste for all that beautiful and old. So the carpenters shop that began in 1963, then became a shop in renaissance style where they create unique pieces, complex and refined, where technology cannot be seen, and where valuable woods are used but most of all fir: bookcases, stairways, kitchens, equipped walls……The master carpenters guided by Ornella, Antonella and Michele Campo, together with the designer Alberto Casagrande and Paolo Valdastri, great wine expert who has created an ambitious project: la cantina di Paul. The wooden wine suite has been presented in Russia and in Switzerland with great success.
And it’s Paolo Valdastri, a dear and old friend, (engineer, wine writer, travel and territorial development expert) who helped me discover la Cantina di Paul during the last Vinitaly. Paolo demonstrated all his refined competence regarding wines and explained where to store Champagne ore great reds at different temperatures according to whether they need to be aged ore just stored for serving. Inside the cabinet is a perfect place for exclusive tastings, everything seems old but behind the inlays are the buttons, and thy juts need to be touched to get into action. To get out there is also a small secret. To get out… in the end this wine suite is the ideal place for a wine as it is equipped with everything you need, corkscrew, glasses, decanter, and great bottles chosen by Paolo Valdastri …. Why get out?
