Brunello Prime Donne, Brunello Riserva and Leone Rosso DOC Orcia
The Leone Rosso wine is dedicated to the ancestors of Donatella Cinelli Colombini who built the Fattoria del Colle in 1592 and had a rampant lion in their coat of arms. The grapes for the Leone Rosso Doc Orcia are born right in the vineyards of the farm. We are talking about the Socini or Sozzini family made up of jurists and philosophers. Two of them – Lelio (1525-1562) and Fausto (1539-1604) have gone down in history for having held an important role among the European freethinkers who gave life to Protestantism. It was precisely their opposition to the Church that led the family to ruin and the Colle farm to be confiscated. The property was repurchased by Donatella’s great-grandfather, the engineer Livio Socini around 1919 who bought it, almost by accident, from a bankruptcy.
Brunello Prime Donne was produced for the first time with the 1993 harvest and is part of the Prime Donne project for the enhancement of female talent in the oenological field. A panel of 4 very expert tasters have a blind tasting of the future Brunello and again in all phases of its life: as soon as it is born, in the barrel, in blending. They are the Masters of Wine, Rosemary George and Madeleine Stenwreth, the wine shop owner Astrid Schwarz and the Sommelier Daniela Scrobogna. Their judgments guide the work of the winemakers of the Casato Prime Donne winery for the production of a Brunello with a “feminine taste” that is released only in great harvests and in small quantities.
Casato Prime Donne where the vineyards used to produce the Brunello di Montalcino Riserva are located, is located in the Northern area of Brunello, the one that has benefited most from climate change. Cold soils and a cool climate allow for perfect grape ripening: very gradual and slow. Before the harvest, the vineyards are divided into small parcels based on the tasting of the grapes. The area with the greatest qualitative potential is destined for the production of Brunello Riserva. The harvest is manual and the bunches are chosen one by one. The vineyards are organically grown and certified since 2018.
