THE 2024 VINTAGE

In Montalcino the 2020 vintage is considered excellent and balanced, characterized by a mild winter, a rainy spring, and a hot summer. The 2024 season yielded wines that are fresh and elegant, with balanced alcohol levels.

2024 HARVEST: WINNING DECISIONS

The grapes reached full ripeness at the end of September, but a series of weather fronts was moving in. The first viable window for harvesting was between Saturday, September 28, and October 2. This was the moment the harvest took place at Casato Prime Donne, with work continuing from dawn to dusk—even on Sunday. The grapes were harvested using a combination of manual and mechanical methods. All the bunches destined for Rosso di Montalcino and Brunello arrived at the winery just before a torrential downpour. We were truly lucky.

THE 2023 VINTAGE

After an extremely dry 2022, 2023 brought abundant rainfall. It rained throughout the winter and—above all—the spring, with a June that saw torrential downpours. Even in summer, very hot days alternated with thunderstorms. Veraison occurred at the end of August, followed by a slow, steady ripening process. It was an old-fashioned climate that produced very classic wines.

Our 2023 Rosso di Montalcino was awarded 90/100 by James Suckling.

CASATO PRIME DONNE

The Casato Prime Donne estate is entirely organically farmed. It is situated on the northern side of Montalcino, on the slopes of Montosoli Hill. The vineyards surround the historic farmhouse that gives the property its name—a building that has belonged to Donatella Cinelli Colombini’s ancestors since at least the late 16th century.

At higher elevations, the soils are rich in clay and Pliocene sands, while the lower sections feature alluvial soil derived from deposits left by the Suga stream. Of the estate’s 40 hectares, 18 are planted with Sangiovese vines trained using the Guyot system.

Casato Prime Donne is the first Italian winery with an all-female staff. The cellar workers, winemakers, consultant, sales team, and hospitality staff are all women—a true standard-bearer for women in winemaking.

ROSSO DI MONTALCINO IN THE GLASS

COLOUR: Intense, brilliant ruby red.

AROMA: The Sangiovese character is clearly perceptible through notes of violet and vinous aromas, alongside scents of ripe red fruit. Subtle spicy nuances come from the oak barrels.

TASTE: Harmonious and possessing the characteristic crispness of Sangiovese; satisfying and savoury, with tannins that—while evident—are smooth and well-integrated. The finish is long and pleasant.

ROSSO DI MONTALCINO AT THE TABLE

Its characteristics are enhanced by traditional Tuscan dishes featuring honest, bold flavours, yet it also pairs beautifully with a wide range of international cuisine, elevating the dining experience. It is an excellent match for medium-bodied dishes, such as pasta with meat, mushroom, or truffle sauces, and complex risottos, as well as pork or veal dishes served with sauce.
