It all started just before Christmas when a pub in Leeds promoted via Facebook Prosecco on tap. This news was then picked up by the Daily Mail and got a hashtag on Twitter that was very successful #proseccoontap. At that point the Veneto producers our out for blood soliciting the intervention of the Ispettorato centrale della tutela della qualità e repressione frodi.

In fact the European rulings impose the sale of Prosecco only in bottles. So the name of the wine was substituted and became  “Sparkling Italian wine”  but the type of wine has remained the same both in its aromas and in its taste. And the pub landlords use the “said and unsaid” to commercialize it as Prosecco even without specifically writing it. This fact has reached high levels such as the European Parliament Committee on Agriculture with an urgent query signed by Nicola Danti, Alessandra Moretti and Paolo De Castro, which asks for  <<more efficient methods in control, that would stop two different critical situations: the sale of sparkling wines on tap as Prosecco but that are something else and the violation of the rulings that regulate the bottling of Prosecco>>.

At the moment, the wine, kept in metal containers and served on tap, just like beer, is “Prosecco” sparkling Italian wine but the success is such that Bibendum intends increasing its range with Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand, Argentinean Malbec  , French  Pinot Noir and …. You’ll not believe this, even with our Sangiovese. On the other hand, as stated by the always well informed English website The Drinks Business, <<in USA restaurants have been serving wine on tap for years>>.

Last titbits from Wine Meridian: Prosecco on tap in Canada to and many Prosecco sounding wines, with reference to sparkling Canadian products sold with the caption “Prosecco House”. Very sticky situation and quite worrying too!
