THE RIEDEL GLASS FOR BRUNELLO

To taste Brunello, crystal glassware is necessary, a balloon shaped cup narrower at the top. Many crystal makers produce glasses of this type but Riedel offers something superior. Riedel was founded in 1756 in Germany and uses the best German technology and a century long traditional craftsmanship. The company is captained by the Riedel family for the last 11 generations and it produces the most famous wine glasses in the world. The “performance collection” to which the glass we have chosen comes from, has a beautiful modern design and the ability to exalt the wine tastes and aromas. But there is one peculiarity: the visual impact inside the bulle that is not perceptible to the touch on the outside. Tiny waves that amplify the vision of the wine and the pleasure of its characteristics.

 

 

CASATO PRIME DONNE AND BRUNELLO

Few territories in the world can make a great wine from just one grape variety like Burgundy with Pinot Noir. Montalcino is one of these territories. Sangiovese here finds the soil and the climate perfect to ripen its grapes slowly and completely giving life to extraordinary wines.

Casato Prime Donne, where the Brunello we are presenting come from, belonged to Donatella Cinelli Colombini’s ancestors already at the end of the 16th century when they were paying taxes for cultivating the land there. In the nineteenth century it was used as a hunting lodge and for honeymoons, and, for four centuries it has never been sold but has been passed down the line from one generation to another.

In 1998 it became the first winery in Italy to be staffed only by women; these include three wine makers, the cellar staff, the sales office staff and the hospitality team.

The Brunello wine comes form 17 hectares of vineyard surrounding the winery where only Sangiovese vines are cultivated. In 2015 the checkups for the organic certification of the vineyards began, this arrived three years later.

Casato Prime Donne is on the Northern slope of Montalcino, the cooler side that has had more benefits from climate change, especially in dry vintages such as 2012; it expresses itself at levels of absolute excellence. In 2012, the winter was cold and dry where not even the abundant snowfalls hydrated the soil. In the summer the temperatures were very high both during the day and night until in September, the intermittent showers consented a balancing of acids and sugar in the grapes together with a parallel ripening of the polyphenols. The grape harvest took place from September 12th to 25th. As always the grapes were handpicked with a careful choice of the clusters in the vineyard and a selection of the best berries in the cellar.

This Brunello marks a change in style by the Casato Prime Donne winery towards tradition and the respect for the typical characteristics of Montalcino: elegance, harmony, length, silkiness, density, complexity … To which, in time, more minerality and softness get added. These results are possible thanks to the climate change that benefit Donatella Cinelli Colombini’s vineyards situated in a cool area of Montalcino with soil rich in clay and consequently able to capture rain water and release it during the hot months.

The grapes come practically entirely from the Ardita vineyard, planted in 2001.

In 2007, the winter was unusually mild and in spring, showers began and continued during the summer, alternating with very hot days. The vines were not consequently hydro stressed and well resisted the high temperatures while the ripening of the grapes took place in a regular way. As always in Donatella Cinelli Colombini’s vineyards the grape harvest was done by hand with a careful selection of the grapes. The barrel ageing lasted 3 years, in barrels of increasing sizes: starting in 5 hl ones for the first years, then 15 hl containers and finally large 30-40 hl barrels.

2004 has been the first great harvest of the new millennium. Awarded 5-stars by the experts who every February decide the rating for the last harvest. In Montalcino the 2004 vintage marks the beginning of a series of 4 positive harvests, one after the other from 2004 to 2008.

A vintage where the climate was extraordinarily favourable. In 2004 the summer was cool, no hydro stress, and the vines were healthy, the veraison was perfect and rapid at the beginning of August. Harvest at the end of September, as was long ago. In the cellar too the vinification was regular and the fermentation temperatures spontaneously low, after, for the barrel ageing, barriques and small barrels were used to begin with, to then finish with larger containers.

 

HOW TO SERVE BRUNELLO AT THE TABLE

Food pairing: important meat dishes and aged cheeses.

Way of serving: room temperature, between 18°C – 64°F for a younger Brunello and 20°C – 68°F for older vintages. It is better to uncork the bottles before serving and especially a few hours earlier for the older Brunello. Decanting is a good practice.

 

HOW TO CELLAR BRUNELLO

Keep the bottles laying flat, in a dark and cool place (15-16°C – 59°F). Those who do not have a cellar apt for ageing wines ought to drink it. Donatella Cinelli Colombini carries out the service of re-corking, certifying the operation, after 20-25 years from the year of bottling when the liquid has reached the shoulder of the bottle.
