November 4-8, Merano Wein Festival
In the most exclusive wine tasting in Italy we too will be present with 5 awarded wines among which the two Brunello 2012 previews, each with a gold medal
Merano Wine Festival for the last 25 years has been the appointment not to be missed for those who work with or love high quality wines, because those invited to participate are only the best wineries and the best wines. The organizer Helmuth Köcher was born in Merano, he has a degree in Political Sciences taken in Innsbruck, he often wears black and has a strong personality; he is practically a myth for his unlimited competence regarding wine and food excellencies from all over the world.IT is he together with two friends who have created in 1992 the GourmetClub Alto Adige and the
Merano WineFestival, first Italian event to accept only producers of high quality wines. Today next to the wines are served also oil, grappa and other foods, also from abroad and from 100 Italian high end gastronomy.
There are prizes for cooking, show-cooking, forums regarding the wine market and special tastings dedicated to the awarded wines and those that are more than 10 years old …it begins November 4th with foreign wines and the biodynamic ones, from the 5th to 7th The Official Wine Selection – the best Italian and foreign wines will be tasted in Kurhaus in Merano, a convention centre in an historical ambiance, among the most beautiful in
Europe. In the gourmet area, with the consortiums there will also be a representative from DOC Orcia , for the first time ever in Merano. On November 8th the gran finale with Champagne.
Merano, Tyrol capital, is a city of art with Roman and medieval traces of great beauty like the San Nicolò church (1465) and the Kurhaus built in 1873 by Josef Czerny and renovated at the beginning of the 20th century by Friedrich Ohmann creator of the large round hall. Merano has a mild climate that has turned it into a destination chosen for health and holidays.
Since last year Helmuth Köcher has re-proposed his initiative, based on a selection of excellent wines, in Siena and in Milan, who will both repeat the event respectively on January 21st -22nd and March 4th-6th adding though the Merano Award selection in Rome on November 27th -28th November. A courageous action, like a great manager, that might take some time to reach success but that could also create great opportunities for wineries and for those who love or sell excellent bottles.
Now, allow me to change the subject slightly for a personal and mischievous opinion of mine. The initiation of Wine&Siena with the tasting organized by Helmuth Köcher in the
Palio city has been, for me, a dream come true, a dream that began in 2003 when I studied with him this event and then had it ditched by the Siena town council where I was at the time Councillor for tourism. I was most disappointed and quite embarrassed, because the Merano Wein Festival organizers, like me, did not understand such a refusal. Years later finally the Sienese event is something concrete, but maybe not with the necessary determination. .
If Siena wants to organize Wine&Siena a major wine event it must follow a more long term strategy, putting aside the immediate necessities, while locally I hear people say that the objective is to give oxygen to the hotels during the low season. Other doubts regard the decision to divide the tastings in ore locations, one of which the Rocca Salimbeni general headquarters of the Monte dei Paschi di Siena bank. It must be considered that the future success of Wine&Siena depends upon the participation of the best wineries. This participation is directly connected to the business that can be generated by the event. To force the buyers to move from one place to another maybe even queuing up before the entrances goes exactly on the opposite direction.
Am I being cynical? Maybe so, but I wish so much that Siena regains its role as large wine city, like a chief town, in one of the most important wine districts in the world and that Wine&Siena can help us to regain this position.
