Brunello 2008 Riserva out to conquer the world

Donatella Cinelli Colombini’s passion is evident in this Riserva 2008 destined to few restaurants and wine stores in 32 nations



The Brunello Riserva is the most important type made by each winery in Montalcino, in fact the great Sangiovese wine is born to last in time and the Riserva enhances this characteristic.

In 2008 only the grapes picked for last were used for making the Riserva. They all come from the Ardita vineyard planted in 2001 on the highest point of Casato Prime Donne and facing south. The soil is poor, very clayey and the vines produce few clusters. To vinify these grapes we used autochthonous selected yeasts. A touch of tradition and localism which adds to the unique imprint of the Sangiovese from the northern area of Montalcino.

The barrel ageing lasted three years, during which the wine first stayed in tonneau and then larger barrels but never in barriques. In fact he wine has only a slight nuance of good wood while it’s the fruit that dominates the aromas and the tastes.

Type: dry red.
Production area: Tuscany, Montalcino, Casato Prime Donne, Ardita vineyard
Climate: winter with no rainfall and spring with real downpours, very frequent and violent. After a cold and long spring the summer was very hot especially July. The grape colouring took place in a regular manner at the beginning of August.
In September rainfalls and cold weather arrived interrupting the ripening of the grapes, which then picked up again slowly but forced the grape growers to postpone the harvest until the beginning of October.
Grape variety: 100% Sangiovese (Brunello).
Grape harvest: from October 3rd to 5th. The harvest was manual, with a careful selection of



the grapes; these reached the cellar in 20 kg. crates in less than half an hour.
Vinification: the alcoholic fermentation tended to be rapid and very hot, and so was regulated through the temperature controlled vats.
Barrel ageing: 3 years in oak barrels, increasing in size: the 5hl for the first year, and then 15hl barrels an finally large barrels 30-40 hl barrels.
Quantity produced: 3000 bottles.

Colour: bright and intense ruby red.
Aroma: fine, clean, complex, with net hints of ripe red fruit balsamic notes and spices.
Taste: very elegant, velvety, full, harmonious, intense, persistent with a hint of bitter almond last pleasantly lingers in the mouth. The robust tannic structure is perfectly balanced by the alcohol content and the fruit.
Matching dishes: important meat dishes and aged cheeses.
Way of serving: Room temperature (20°C). Use balloon shaped crystal wine goblets. Open at least one hour before serving.
Home ageing: 30 years and more. Keep the bottles lying down in a dark and cool place. Have the corks changed in Donatella Cinelli Colombini’s winery around the year 2035.
