Recently I have had the opportunity to be present at a couple of press meetings held by the Ministro Mario Catania. I have felt reassured by this distinguished gentleman, always impeccably dressed, composed, very competent in agriculture. He doesn’t have the gift for communication like Luca Zaia did, but he certainly does not make us feel the absence of the Ministro Giancarlo Galan, who was more apt for else, and of Ministro Saverio Romano. Because of his elegance he rivals Paolo De Castro and like Walter Luchetti great friend of Donatella Cinelli Colombini, his forming took place defending Italian agriculture in the difficult Community negotiations. He is not a politician. The only sore point is the name of the ministry MIPAAF. What a horrible acronym for a ministry will a kilometric name “Ministero delle politiche agricole, ambientale e forestali”.
During the press conference presenting the 2011 rapport regarding Italian DOP – IGP – STG productions organized by Qualivita – Ismea Mario Catania said that the quality of our products is always getting higher. It was about time Mr Minister! After years of Spanish oil, sold for Italian, blue mozzarellas, meat produced without rigorous checks an imported and competing with ours…. finally we will be able to recognize our home land products.
The Qualivita catalogue, at the presentation of which I met Catania, is an atlas of food products with the certification ” denominazione di origine”. It is published yearly by an institute based in Siena and has as director Mauro Rosati.

Other that the weight , which would impede even the strongest to carry the volume in their cases, the catalogue is extremely useful, exhaustive and precise because it enables one to get to know the best food products from all over Europe. From here one must start with the defence of origin and authenticity of cheeses, cold cuts, oils, spices, beer, meats …Two years ago the catalogue Qualigeo di Qualivita won the Casato Prime Donne award assigned by Provincia di Siena for its utility and divulging and protection of strongly traditional foods.
