An article in WineNews has tickled my curiosity to see which Guinness winners regard the wine world. There are 18 of them and none of them in Italy, but at least one is in my beloved Malta: here there is a record for the largest wine glass 3,87 metres of cup with an altitude of 2,04 m, created for the festival of the Chiesa di San Giorgio in Hal Qormi. The Parish Church festivals are gigantic in Malta and the religious ceremonies have bands, street illumination, sweets, markets and obviously wine.
The largest Champagne flute in the world contains 56.25 litres, equivalent to 75 bottles and has been hand made, in three working days in Ukraine by Agrofirm Zolotaia Balka Ltd in 2011. It is definitely smaller than the Maltese glass because it is only 1,32 m high. The largest winery is in South Africa in Paarl in the Cape Province. It covers 22 hectares and has a capacity of 121 million litres. It is a cooperative winery known as KWV – Koöperatiewe Wijnbouwers Vereniging. Its structures are in part simple: roofs in corrugated galvanised iron, large corridors full of barriques and barrels….but what does surprise is the ability of the South Africans to think on a large scale.
For the winery with the largest bottle storage the record belongs to Milestii Mici in Moldova with its million and a half wine bottles stored in 55km of underground galleries. This cellar is amazing, for its dimension but also because of its arched niches which resemble catacombs.
The oldest cellar in the world record goes to Commandaria in Cyprus which has produced
sweet wines for the last 2000 years.
The wine produced there is also the one with the oldest appellation as in 1223 the King of France Philip II Augustus, called it ”the apostle of wines” and delimited the production area. The region in Cyprus where this wine is produced is called Commanderie since the time of the crusades, when the Order of Saint John, in 1210, built there the Kolossi castle.
Among the restaurants the one with the longest wine list in the world is Chiggeri in Luxemburg with its 1.746 references. All the wines are offered to clients for at least six month. The Ristorante Panorama
In Philadelphia is the one with the largest number of wines by the glass tank to a temperature controller machine where 120 bottles are kept and are saturated with an inert gas.
The restaurant with the highest bottle storage is in Toronto in Canada in the CN Tower’s “Cellar in the sky” at 351 metres from the ground. With different characteristics all of these locations are very very charming.
Le t me conclude with the largest bottle in the world, 3,8m high and one metre wide, containing 2.019 litres and produced by OK Watterfäscht in Switzerland in 2011.
