DanieleCernilli DonatellaCinelliColombini ONAV Congress 2013

By Donatella Cinelli Colombini, #winedestination

I have known Doctor Wine-Daniele Cernilli for almost forty years, when he was a young philosophy professor with a passion for tasting wine and the mission of raising the quality of Italian wineries by forcing them to compare themselves with each other and with the rest of the world.

We respect each other and are fond of each other. I cannot forget his words of comfort after the death of my husband Carlo. However, our sensitivities for wine diverge: Cernilli prefers leading wine makers like Carlo Ferrini, I believe in nature as the absolute protagonist. A distinction that leads to different outcomes especially in style. In fact, those who, like me, pick the grapes before over- ripeness softens the skin, produce more elegant but less powerful wines than those who wait. But I am convinced that this choice maintains a greater imprint of the terroir and the vintage in the wine.  I intend to continue along this path: less power and more territoriality because the wine must tell and surprise and not always be the same.

I am grateful to Daniele Cernilli for having included my winery in the Essential Guide of Italian Wines 2025, also assigning it a star. It’s a joy and an honour.

<<We are pleased to inform you of the results obtained from the product you presented at the CMB Concours Mondial de Bruxelles – Sweet & Fortified Wines Session 2024 which took place from 1 to 2 October. This year, a total of 340 wine samples were subjected to the judgment of our jury of international professionals>> and Donatella Cinelli Colombini’s Vin Santo del Chianti DOC won the Gold Medal.

With this simple email we received the news of an unexpected and very welcome recognition for our Vin Santo.

A MINI SERIES OF 500 SMALL BOTTLES CONTAINING SWEET NECTARS

From the graphs accompanying the letter it is possible to see that our wine was tasted blind by a panel of six tasters including 3 Belgians, 2 Portuguese and one Dutch. The thing that struck them most was the persistence of the Vin Santo which is, on the palate, the most evident character followed by balance and acidity.

On the nose, the tasters noticed more of the aroma of walnut/dried fruit as well as honey, while the balsamic notes appeared more nuanced.

THE ADVANCE OF WHITE WINES AND EXCESS PRODUCTION

CONSIDERATIONS ON THE CHANGE IN WINE CONSUMPTION FROM RED TO WHITE AND THE NEED TO RECONVERT WHICH ESPECIALLY CONCERNS TUSCANY, THE LAND OF SANGIOVESE

Vernaccia di San Gimignano

The ISMEA 2024 wine sheet is an excellent observation point and helps us frame the Italian situation in the global scenario. On the planet, wine consumption fell from 246 million hectolitres in 2018 to 232 in 2022 while production, net of the 2018 big harvest and the 2023 slide, remained almost stable at 252 million hectolitres. What has changed is the colour: in the last 5 years the production of white wines has gone from 55% to 57.7% of the total. So the excess production is red in colour and this explains the massive clearing of vineyards in the less reputed areas of Bordeaux and the rumours of similar measures also in Spain.

One wonders whether these interventions will be enough to save the fall in prices, given the continuous increase in production in the areas without European regulations and production costs. I’m thinking of Chile, Argentina or China.
