BRUCE SANDERSON’S DESCRIPTION OF THE 2017 VINTAGE OF BRUNELLO
Bruce Sanderson’s description of the 2017 harvest is masterful in terms of synthesis and effectiveness << The winter was mild and rainy until March, when temperatures increased, leading to an early bud break. In mid-April, a frost occurred which caused some damage. However, the biggest impact was the drought from May to August, with high temperatures in July and August…. The rain in mid-September refreshed the vines and revived the grapes>>.
The description of the harvest highlights the different dynamics in the southern part of Montalcino where the harvest began in early September and in the northern area, where the Casato Prime Donne is located, grapes were picked 3 weeks later with lower temperatures.

Brunello 2017 Casato Prime Donne-93/100-Wine-Spectator
Overall a harvest scarce in quantity which favoured the old vineyards and those who carefully selected the grapes by eliminating the ruined grapes. << In the end, the wines offer darker fruit flavours, with more plum than strawberry, as well as robust tannins that sometimes seem astringent, with the best examples remaining fresh and balanced>>.
Sanderson points out that many wineries, such as Casato Prime Donne, did not produce the Riserva type in 2017. This is a circumstance that has benefited the vintage Brunello, by Casato Prime Donne, by raising the quality.
93/100 BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO 2017 CASATO PRIME DONNE – DONATELLA CINELLI COLOMBINI
A dense red, with a solid build, with aromas of wild herbs, eucalyptus and soy that envelop the heart of cherry and plum fruit. Balanced and pleasantly lingering on the fruity, savoury and tobacco aftertaste. The best time to drink it from 2025 to 2040.
93/100 BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO 2017 SELECTION “PRIME DONNE” CASATO PRIME DONNE – DONATELLA CINELLI COLOMBINI
Lithe, long and intense, I red immediately showing aromas of undergrowth, wood, mushroom, cherry and flowers; on the palate there are ferrous suggestions, references to tobacco and tar. Currently the finish is framed by great tannins, but all the components are in the right proportions. The best time to drink it is from 2024 to 2042.
