California dreamin' changes music and becomes Brunello dreamin'
February 8th, the new Brunello in a preview tasting in San Francisco with 40 Montalcino wineries. Together with their colleagues from Prosecco,
Chianti Classico and Vino Nobile.
Seen for you by Donatella Cinelli Colombini
The event location is not very large but very refined with respect to where the tasting took place two days ago in New York. The public is also decidedly more elegant, evidently aesthetics count more here than in the big apple.
At the seminary, the 150 seats are nit sufficient, other than the operators and experts already booked, another 30 people arrive. We decide not to send them away and offer them a stand up tasting, they seem satisfied even though, among them, there are two master sommelier.
The bottles from Montalcino are those with the longer ageing so they arrive for
last, everyone follows in religious silence the explanations given by the very clever journalist who guides the tasting. At the end the Director of the Consorzio del Brunello Stefano Campatelli answers some of the more technical questions, and I in the role of Vice-president, underline the excellence of the tasting and invite al present to come to Montalcino. In truth nearly everyone has already been, for a wine lover a visit to Brunello land is equal to a journey to the
Mecca for a Muslim. It’s a must!
In the tasting hall about 150 producers, each behind their table, offer their wines and explanations. In the afternoon 600 distributors, importers, sommeliers, restaurateurs, experts and journalists arrive …. They are extremely punctual, they have 4 hours time for tasting, in fact the new trend for these events it to keeps times short.
There are many excellent wineries but we from Montalcino are the main attraction that is why they have given us more space and the area further away from the entrance.
Even here in San Francisco the interest for Brunello is very strong. It’s the third time in 10 years that the wines from Montalcino have a united event here, and each time more and more people come, evidently repetita iuvant or something like “the more you get the more you want”.
